King University President Andy Tooley, Ph.D., announced today that Brian Shupe, associate dean for Advancement at Emory University’s School of Law, will join King as vice president for university advancement, effective March 31. Shupe has nearly two decades of experience in major gift fundraising, sales and marketing, and strategic planning.
“Brian’s depth of experience, passion for Christian higher education, and proven ability to foster strong relationships will be key as we continue to expand King’s presence and service to others,” President Tooley said. “We’re very excited to welcome him and look forward to sharing in the insight and excitement that he brings to the King community.”
At Emory University, Shupe played an integral role in securing more than $18 million in funding for Emory Law. Under his leadership, Emory Law celebrated its best fundraising year in history this past August. Prior to joining Emory, he held senior leadership roles at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, including executive director of development for the Tickle College of Engineering, where he raised a total of $138 million during his five-year term for projects such as the Zeanah Engineering Complex naming and the Engineering Diversity Program. He is also a former account executive with The Vol Network, a division of Learfield, which manages all marketing rights for University of Tennessee Athletics.
“As a native of this region I find it deeply rewarding to advocate on behalf of those students who rely on the support of scholarships and other financial aid in their pursuit of a college degree,” Shupe said. “I look forward to helping King serve more students, deepen our region’s workforce, and impact greater areas of the southeast.”
In his new role for the University, Brian will be responsible for developing a strategic vision for King’s division of Advancement, which will include the designing, preparing, and executing of a future comprehensive philanthropic campaign. As a member of the president’s cabinet, he will also serve as a trusted advisor to the board of trustees while fostering collaborative partnerships with colleagues across campus, the community, and alumni, parents, and friends.
Shupe holds a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he has lived and worked for more than 30 years.
