I never planned on working in higher education. I was a hands-on social work practitioner. I liked problem-solving. As my career started to take a different path, I found my way into higher education and learned that I enjoyed engaging with college students about a topic that I had a passion for. I began to explore the possibility of teaching in a faith-based institutions.
I have been at King since 2020 and appreciate its commitment to the integration of faith and learning. The University’s Christ-centered focus permeates throughout the institution. The field of social work in America has roots in the religiously instilled beliefs of the church. One of the best things about being at this university is the ability to engage students in a learning process that allows for open and honest discussion about difficult social problems and the role of faith, religion and spirituality in addressing the issues of our time.
Expertise and Research Interests
My early experience and training led me to focus on urban youth. I have worked in several communities and capacities with Young Life and local churches. I have more specifically focused on child welfare and applied my education to the prevention and intervention of child abuse and neglect. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Oregon have held licenses in both Alaska and Kentucky.
Religion and spirituality in social work education has been the primary focus of my research. I have also focused on program development and assessment throughout my professional and academic career.
Outside the Classroom
I enjoy many things outside the classroom. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. That means that eating gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, crawfish, shrimp and anything with Creole and Cajun seasoning is a favorite pastime of mine. I have a great family that is funny, quirky, and blessed. I have always enjoyed multiple sports, but I prefer playing basketball. I follow the only “Christian” NFL team—the New Orleans Saints. I am a self-taught mediocre guitar player who really enjoys the Blues and Jazz music of the Big Easy.
